Current Responsibilities

As Executive Vice President of Amira Senior Living, Karla is responsible for United Propertiesā€™ senior living business line. She oversees both new development, acquisitions, management of the company’s portfolio of senior living investment assets, and the Amira brand. She drives the overall strategy for the business line and facilitates securing capital to execute the same, with the fundamental goal of creating and investing in high-quality senior living communities. She leads a team of eight with members in Minneapolis and Denver who implement and support the company’s senior living strategic initiatives.

Karla is also a member of United Properties’ Strategic Leadership Team which establishes the company’s overall strategic plan and oversees the organization’s broader operational initiatives.

Past Experience

Karla held the position of partner and vice president at Capital Real Estate Inc. for more than 10 years, during which she gained a deep understanding of the development process and built strong relationships with lenders and equity partners. In 2022, she joined United Properties as vice president of capital markets, where she was responsible for securing equity for speculative and build-to-suit developments for the company’s commercial and senior development pipeline, structuring joint ventures, and managing the due diligence process for equity partners to ensure timely closings.

Karla is an active member of American Seniors Housing Association (ASHA) and National Investment Center (NIC).

Education

Karla earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business.

Current Responsibilities

Andrea is responsible for managing daily operations and overseeing compliance audits, budget process and due diligence with our third-party operators for United Propertiesā€™ Senior Living communities. In addition, she also manages the coordination of marketing efforts across senior living brands, market research and analysis.

Past Experience

Andrea has over 15 years of experience in Senior Living. Prior to joining United Properties in 2021, she served as a Regional Director of Operations with a focus in New Developments for Ebenezer Management Services. She has held leadership roles for several senior living communities owned and managed by Ecumen and Augustana Care.

Education

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business – Healthcare Management from Concordia College – Moorhead and Master of Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.Ā  Andrea is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and a Licensed Assisted Living Director in Minnesota.

Current Responsibilities

In this role, Matt oversees the entire senior living development process for United Properties in the Colorado market, from site acquisition and underwriting to design, construction, opening, and lease-up.

Past Experience

Matt joined United Properties in 2015, bringing over 10 years of design and construction management experience from Project One Integrated Services and Turner Construction. He has an extensive background in development, covering construction management, sales, acquisitions, sourcing, underwriting, and more.

Professional and Community Involvement

Matt is passionate about sustainability and environmental responsibility, and as a LEEDĀ® Accredited Professional, he is committed to promoting sustainable design and construction practices in the community. In 2011, he served as the Co-chair of the USGBC Advocacy Committee Metro Branch and continues to volunteer with Rebuilding Together to help rebuild and repair homes for those in need.

Education

Matt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan and an MBA in entrepreneurship, finance and real estate from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Current Responsibilities

As Development Director, Naomi is responsible for leading and executing multiple development projects including securing new opportunities, land acquisitions, underwriting, entitlements, land planning, architectural and design decisions, financing, marketing strategy, lease-up and all other aspects of development.

Past Experience

Prior to joining United Properties, Naomi served as a Real Estate Manager at Christopher & Banks for over 15 years where she specialized on establishing comprehensive scope and direction for real estate portfolio including the strategy, expansion and lease renewal process to meet strategic objectives and long-term goals.

Education

Naomi holds both a bachelorā€™s degree in Business Administration from Bemidji University and a masterā€™s degree in Business Administration from Hamilton University.

Current Responsibilities

As Vice President of Senior Living Development, Dave is responsible for all facets of the senior living development cycle, including site acquisition, project underwriting, design, supporting capital and debt placement, development, and construction execution.

Past Experience

Dave has been a part of United Properties since 2015, when he joined as Development Manager. During his tenure, he has successfully overseen several senior housing development projects, and was subsequently promoted to his current role. Dave’s expertise in both horizontal development and vertical construction has been a major factor in the success of the team. Before joining United Properties, Dave spent over a decade in the general contracting business, managing vertical construction projects in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Florida.

Dave is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). With a passion for creating lasting communities that our customers can call home, Dave is enthusiastic about the future of senior living and values the relationships that are formed throughout the journey.

Education

Dave earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota.

Current Responsibilities

As the Vice President of Senior Living Asset Management, Laura is responsible for the oversight and operations of third-party managers for our senior living communities. She understands the operating business of senior living real estate and develops trusted working relationships with both internal and external customers.

Past Experience

Laura has over 10 years of Senior Living experience starting in accounting and transitioning most recently to operations. Laura is passionate about creating better, flourishing environments for older adults. She joined United Properties in 2018 as a Financial Analyst for our Senior Living communities. Prior to joining United Properties, Laura served as an Executive Director at The Waters of Plymouth and also worked in their corporate offices as a Senior Living Accountant.

Education

Laura earned her Bachelors of Business Administration Degree in Healthcare Management from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Current Responsibilities

Alex has been a member of the residential development group since 2005. In this role, he focuses on multi-family residential development in the Twin Cities. His responsibilities include project management as well as overseeing the residential property management group.

Past Experience

Alex joined United Properties in 1992 as a senior property manager. He was one of the four portfolio managers leading the property management division. In this role, he managed a nine-person team responsible for a diverse portfolio of more than six million square feet. Prior to joining United Properties, Alex was with Rubloff, Inc. in Chicago, where he managed properties on behalf of institutional owners.

Professional and Community Involvement

Alex has been involved in local organizations such as BOMA and NAIOP. He was on the BOMA Board of Directors from 2003 through 2005. He obtained CPM and RPA designations.

Education

Alex holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Denver.

Matt Van Slooten is the chief executive officer of United Properties.

Current Responsibilities

As chief executive officer, Van Slooten oversees all aspects of the business.

Past Experience

Matt joined United Properties in 2018 as President and Portfolio CIO and was promoted to CEO in 2022. Matt has been a long-time real estate industry leader, with 25 years at Carlson Real Estate Company, advancing through all critical company roles leading ultimately to becoming president of the organization, a post he held for 13 years. Matt also served as the president of commercial properties for CSM Corporation for 4 years, overseeing a 10 million sq. ft. portfolio of industrial, office, and retail properties.

Professional and Community Involvement

Matt is an active member of the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP) and a past Chapter President of NAIOP Minnesota. He is also a recipient of the NAIOP Presidentā€™s Award (2009). He is an active member of the Young Presidentā€™s Organization (YPO) and served on the Minnesota Chapter board as the membership chair. While at Carlson Companies, he was the recipient of the Carlson Fellow Award for Leadership Achievement, the companyā€™s highest honor.
